I almost hit a deer on the way home... going 55 and having my high beams on saved my car.

It was standing in the middle of the road and I saw it out of the corner of my eye just before it came into the light of my headlights, which gave me enough time to hit the breaks (sending everything on my front passenger seat flying) and slow down because once it saw my high beams, it panicked and went right into my lane and then ran off into the bushes.

This time of year they come out more often because Hunters are spooking them and they come out to rut. I HATE HATE HATE it! It makes driving home so unsafe.

Yesterday when I drove home from work I saw one dead and marked on on the road... this afternoon when I drove too work, I saw four more.

My mum says that one of these days, I'm going to hit one. Hell no, I say... I already hit my one, that it's. No more... kthnxbi.

House Passes Healthcare Bill

In a victory for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House narrowly passed landmark health care legislation Saturday night to expand coverage to tens of millions who lack it and place tough new restrictions on the insurance industry. Republican opposition was nearly unanimous.

I don't effing believe it ... I almost want to shed a tear, but I remain skeptical until it's all actually implemented.

... and he heard a dog barking on Mom's TV, and it spooked him awake. I got up to go pet him, and he went into the back room and sat down again, and stared at Mom. Mom kept calling him over to her, but he just sat there staring at her. Finally, he just rolled over again. XD Poor dog, so tired.

No more Lexmarks after this. They make you pay your firstborn child for ink cartridges, and they can't even get a device driver out in time for a launch everyone and their dog knew about.

I haven't been able to post about last week-end until today because D has been hogging the computer. He used to have his own but it finally bit the dust and he's trying to finish his thesis. It was great timing.

Last week-end we had so many trick-or-treaters that we had to go out for more candy and used all but two fireballs! At first we didn't know what time kids would come and it seemed as though not many were out so we gave kids two pieces. Then around 8:30 we ran out and huge groups of kids were still coming. So D braved the crazy streets to get more. It was crazy! I think the entire town of Alameda came out to our house! And out first bag of candy was 150 pieces from Cosco. I thought we'd have a ton of leftovers because the bag looked so huge.

After the kids stopped coming we went to our next door neighbors' because they were having a Halloween/ birthday party for the wife. They'd hired a dj and, since it is still so nice out here, I ended up dancing outside until 12 when the police came and said it was too loud. That was three solid hours, and trust me my legs felt it the next day! I must be getting old.

Then on Sunday I met a friend from college who was in the area on her way to work on a farm in Hawaii. Not my cup of tea but she was excited. We hung out in Alameda and tried to go to the beach but apparently the bay area can't not have a tragedy and there had been an oil spill a few days before and the beach was closed. eh. But I love that it is warm enough here to go to the beach on the first day of November!

All together, a very fun week-end.

Earlier in the evening I opened up my NaNo and added a few words. Looked down at my word count (Word 2007, your menus are COMPLETELY retarded different compared to 2003, but thank you, THANK you for having the word count show automatically at the bottom of the document) and saw it was 13,431. Went to the NaNo website and hunted down the Shoutouts thread for palindrome word counts and added mine, and said I'd end on a palindrome tonight if I could help it. (Also, that is a pretty cool number. After posting, I noticed: 1+3=4-3=1. I was almost reluctant to add words to it.) I ended up screwing around with what I'd written and taking a bunch of stuff out... like, 800 words or so, but stuff needed changing or I was going to write myself into a corner.

Anyway, just looked down again: 14,041. Haha.

Might write a little more... Really, I want to hit 15,000 tonight if I can. I'm trying to stay a few days ahead at all times. Yay for having next Wednesday off from work, though! That'll be fun. I think I'll stay up stupidly late on Tuesday and sleep in Wednesday morning.

Downtown, at work, was complete chaos--I work a couple blocks down from Broadway/the Canyon of Heroes. So many people. o_o While I was waiting for my lunch (pizza), someone yelled out, "In New York, we smoke Phillies!" and everyone just started cheering. I don't think I've seen anything like that, ever.

Also, there were maybe four people in my department that were in all day today including myself. Maureen actually came in because traffic was a bitch and she got fed up trying to get to the ACS Children's Center (where she was supposed to be helping with training, but there are three other people there to my knowledge) and stayed in the office for a little while, and Joseph came in and left half an hour later, haha. It was SO quiet. I loved it.

Paper on William Blake and Pierpont Morgan: A

Midterm portfolio: A

I was one of only two people in the class to get an A on their portfolio, and Prof. Mayer REALLY liked my crosshatch drawings. She said they were beautiful. And then she said, "Well, I think I'll give your portfolio an A. And here's your paper. A. Be humble in there." Inside I was absolutely freaking out. ^_____^ She and I talked about why I'm in school, and she said since I have a job I can experiment with classes. She said I should take Intro to Design (which I have to--it's required for the major) and Color Theory if I'm not sure what I want to do yet, since those two classes have much to do with the others.

A, dude. I am super happy. Totally makes up for me second-guessing myself on the psychology homework we had to turn in yesterday and finding out that the part I crossed out actually should've been in there. Haha, as it is, Prof. Vianna's probably going to ask me what happened with that.

NaNo writing is going well. Should get lots of writing in on Friday, when the boss will be out. ^_^ I should call up Follicles tomorrow and see if I can get my hair done after work Friday. I don't really feel like it, but it needs to get done... and I actually cut my hair shorter the night I last got it done (think I mentioned that...), and I have a feeling it needs to be evened out. ^^;

Super busy lately and more social than I'd expect for the onset of cold weather. This is supposed to be the time I go into my deep depression and work on some huge comic project. My mental cycles are all out of whack. Nah, just another example to where when I think I've finally figured my brain's patterns out, it throws another curve ball. Keeps things interesting, but it's still frustrating.

Okay, I'm just getting to really play with it now, but one HUGE plius: You can preview a wallpaper before you set it. Like, you go into Personalization and there's a button for desktop background, and you click on a picture and the current desktop picture fades into the one you clicked. That is sweet.

Taskbar stuff is much more condensed, too. Say, Semagic doesn't show up as a bar saying "Semagic" anymore. It shows up as a button. When I'm in Semagic, the button is highlighted. Because I have it pinned to the taskbar, it just darkens again when I close it. (Also, I just noticed that the mouse highlight for each button matches its icon. Semagic's symbol is a purple pen. If I hover the cursor over the button, it's purple. And if you start with the cursor in one corner of the button and move it across, the light follows the cursor.

Different folders are shown under one button, too, and you just toggle between them. (And they come up on screen like the wallpapers do.)

I'm liking what I see. It's just aesthetics so far, but I like it. The only thing I've had to do is update my nVidia driver. Lexmark is once again behind and lacks an updated driver for Win7. They do this every time. Surely they could have started working on this earlier so they'd have it done. 9_9 That's okay, because I saw an Epson all-in-one that will likely end up replacing the Lexmark whenever I get my hands on some extra money.

Also? Eggs are not for drawing. They're for eating. And I'm actually hungry right now and might scramble a few. It's late, but I haven't eaten since around one, and yeah.

ANYWAY. Back to Windows 7. If you have an e-mail address from a college in the US, you can get it for $30, which is why I have it on my computer right now. I downloaded it and I'm having them send me a disc, just in case.

Subject of a spam message: I know it was probably nothing more than a footman carrying a lantern across the lawn...

Seriously. Usually it's nothing like that. XD That sounds like a line from a book or something. Probably is.

Did my charcoal drapery 18x24! I'm feeling mixed about it. Part of me is satisfied, and part of me thinks there's entirely too much shadowing, which there had to be because of the angle of the light. I suppose I could draw it again with the light from the ceiling fan, but then practically the whole thing would be white, and I'm not sure that's the way I need to go. Maybe I'll add a little more white to the drawing tomorrow.

Did lots of writing today. Boss will be back in tomorrow. With any luck, a bunch of people will call out and he'll cancel his stupid meeting, and I can go about my business, hehe.

Watch me end up down at Blick tomorrow buying another few sheets of gray paper so I can do another drawing. I'm going to be exhausted when I get home tomorrow, I know it, and I'm going to draw the stupid drapery again. Bah. Mom likes what I did. I'm just not sure about it myself. ^^;;

I am much too old to be pulling all-nighters to finish papers.

Aren't I?

In related news, none of my professors shall ever be permitted to see the notes I write for these papers, because they are full of incomprehensible acronyms, shorthand, as well as words like "lol", "derp", and "orly".

But wait! You say. How could something published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal possibly warrant a "lol" or a "derp"?

Allow me to enlighten you. Ahem.

Psychrophile = microbe that is specifically adapted to grow at cold temperatures (say, the bacteria you would find at the bottom of the Antarctic Ocean)
Mesophile = microbe that is specifically adapted to grow at moderate temperatures (say, the E.coli in your gut)

"The results indicate that, as a physiological adaptation to the permanently cold Arctic environment, psychrophilic sulfate reducers have considerably higher specific metabolic rates than their mesophilic counterparts at similarly low temperatures."

DEEEERRRRRRRRP. Whut you say? Psychrophile has higher metabolic rate than mesophile at low temperatures? No wai.

STOP THE PRESSES. IT IS TIME TO PUBLISH YOUR FACT. ALL MUST KNOW.

Somethings just make me really sad. Over and over again ...

In other news ... NOT having a $250 doctor bill has really helped the finances this pay period. By golly I get paid again in a week and we are still well enough ahead and all the bills have been paid so far this month. Still expecting a couple but gee! I did have the remainder of my TEC visit, but that was only $26.

I'm still expecting a couple more doctor bills, but I think they'll be manageable. Hopefully. And we are rearranging our income so maybe both of us will have some spending money! Looks like I'll be able to afford christmas afterall. Perhaps with this next pay, I'll be able to place my order to Oriental Trading and LTD!

Anyways, Hallowe'en was fun this year. Much more fun when there is a child involved. Due to flu season and the fact that Aerin was running a low grade fever all weekend, we made the decision not to go house to house. Instead, we dressed Aerin up in her faerie costume with the bows and her pink thermal underwear underneath (it was threatening to snow) and headed off to Wal-mart which was doing a trick or treat through the store thing.

At the door, you received a check off sheet showing where all the candy stations were then you go from station to station, get a sticker on your sheet and some candy in your bucket. She had a BALL! She's obcessed with pumpkins and loved digging through the candy she got... it wasn't huge amounts and there was a decent variety of things she could eat. At the photo center, they took and printed a free Hallowe'en photo of her. Got some groceries (kill two birds with one stone thing) and then went over to Granny's to trick or treat over there.

We had two trick or treaters to our door.

Once home, she started acting under the weather and so had supper, a bath, and went to bed. She'd been running a low temp of 99.5 off and on since Thursday when she had her seasonal flu shot. By 10 pm, it was up to 100.5 and she was coughing pretty bad. I called my mum at work who advised that if it reached 101 even after the Tylenol, to bring her in to TEC. Gave her some children's tylenol cold and flu and by Midnight it was back down to 99.7. She started coughing again at 5:30 this morning and she got some more medicine but thankfully her temp was back to normal. She's still been a little off but nothing more than a mild mucousy cough. No doubt, it was a reaction to her flu vaccine.

The whole H1N1 has gotten so many people paranoid and while Adrian and I don't have our seasonal yet, we both have H1N1. She's not eligible for H1N1, but has her seasonal. I don't know. I'm not taking any chances.

Today I had some friends over for dinner. A big pot of chili, corn muffins, lemonade and cupcakes. It was really fun!

Thus ends my four day weekend. I meant to have a lot of down time but between Hallowe'en, getting my car fixed, going to my cousin's birthday, and having friends over, there wasn't much down time at all. My house is relatively tidy and I got some swaps done for swap bot, just ATC's, but really. I feel more tired going out and then I did going into this weekend. :D

Back to work tomorrow. I love my Monday shift.

Craig cooked for us today. He made something called (I think) garden chicken--chicken and fettucine, topped with garlic and basil. Also had tomatoes, but seeing as I don't eat tomatoes, I heated up some tomato sauce for myself. It was really good. Also, for all of Craig's "leave me alone" attitude toward school, he really likes to cook. I could tell. I watched him while he was moving around the kitchen, and I could just see it. I made sure to tell Dad when Craig's back was turned. Like, he's not just saying he wants to be a chef, he really likes to cook.

Next week he's making that cornflake-breaded fried chicken, damnit. XD;

Mom said if he can't get his grades up and do as well as we know he can, she's not against him going into the military and learning that way... but she said a branch like the Air Force. Maybe Navy. Definitely not Army. A branch that treats their people well, and one where Craig would probably not be doing any fighting. (When I was considering it years ago, I was thinking Air Force, too.) Lottery winnings would be awesome, cosmos. Not having to worry about the cost of culinary school would be excellent. I don't want him coming out with a ridiculous amount of debt, you know?

So anyway, that's my family report for the week. I'm glad I got to see him cook. ^_^

BACK TO WORK. Just shy of 2,000 words. Want to get at least 3,000 if I can before I go to bed tonight. I'm going to write a ton more tomorrow at work if the boss isn't around (hopefully), and work on art homework tomorrow night. The crosshatch drawings were for the midterm, not homework--I have to draw three pages of an egg in the sketchbook (there's a reason why I'm drawing it three times, I can't remember off the top of my head what the exact assignment is) and either a hanging piece of cloth or a cloth draped over a chair in the 18x24. The egg will be a piece of cake, and the drapery shouldn't be too bad either. Hell, everything should be easy after crosshatching! XD;;

I plugged in my owl to look cute while I work. Just because. I love the thing, it's so adorable.

Picked it up yesterday. 'Tis awesome. They streamlined the bonus rounds, so they take place on the top screen while the actual game keeps going, instead of interrupting gameplay every time a bonus round is triggered like in the first game. Also, the music = YES. Better than the first game's.

Now, I have lots of catch-up writing to do. I spent a ridiculous amount of time on crosshatch drawings, the first of which running just past midnight last night, and I sat down to try and write, but my brain had completely shut down and nothing was working. And I just decided when I got home about 1 1/2 hours ago to scrap what I had and start over. (Yeah, you're not supposed to do that in NaNo, but I can write 700 words. I'm already more than halfway there.)

The other night, I was walking to my apartment after my night class. As I was waiting to cross a road, a car stopped at the light. All four doors opened and 3 guys and a girl got out to run around the car screaming, "Chinese fire drill!" I got excited and joined in running around the car. After a minute or so, one of the guys yelled, "Everybody in!" Somehow, I ended up behind the wheel. The light turned green, so I turned and drove down the road to my apartment building. I stopped, turned off the car, thanked them for the ride, got out and started running up to my building. While I was running, I heard one of the guys ask, "Who the hell was that?" This was easily the proudest I've been of myself in 4 years at college. MLIA
